VT/NH Chapter Board Work Day
By Curt Laffin, VT/NH Chapter
On July 12, seven board members from the VT/NH Chapter participated in a Chestnut Work Day hosted by fellow board member, Doug McLane, at his property in Plymouth, NH. This social distance gathering focused on germplasm conservation orchards (GCO). Doug enthusiastically and effectively demonstrated what a GCO is, how to create and maintain one, and why they are important to chestnut restoration.
He demonstrated how to plant and care for trees, and discussed pollination and mudpacking techniques. The intent was to educate new board members about approaches toward restoration and prepare them to make good decisions that will move the chapter forward. He obviously succeeded. Participants had favorable reactions and expressed thanks to Doug for helping them more clearly understand all the work that goes into American chestnut restoration.
