Beaver Lake Pollination Demonstration – Asheville

June 9, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a chestnut breeder?

Please join us at beautiful Beaver Lake for a one-day pollination demonstration and workshop to learn the basics of chestnut breeding.

The workshop is a hands-on opportunity to learn the techniques we use for controlled crosses in the TACF breeding program. We’ll cover all the steps in the process from finding and identifying an American chestnut tree, how to recognize the male and female flowers, emasculation and bagging, pollen collection and handling, labelling and record-keeping, and the intimate details of hand pollination.

The training will begin at 5:00 PM Eastern on Friday, 6/9 at the stand of chestnuts near the meadow at Beaver Lake.

Beaver Lake is located at:
Merrimon Ave. and Wembley Rd., Asheville NC 28804

The coordinates where the trees are located are approximately: 35.634628, -82.558163

Parking is available at the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary lot nearby.

You should bring: whatever you’d feel comfortable in standing outside for a period of time. Sensible shoes are a must! Dress for the weather and don’t forget to bring plenty of water and a snack. This is an all-ages event. Everyone is welcome. No experience necessary.

Rain Date: If we experience inclement weather, please join us 3:00 PM Eastern on Sunday, 6/11. We will email in the event of a date change.

We hope to see you there!
