VA-TACF American Chestnut Festival

October 23 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

On October 23, 2022, The American Chestnut Foundation Virginia Chapter and the Congressional Cemetery are planning an outdoor, daytime celebration of American chestnut trees: their storied history, their tragic near-extinction, and their imminent restoration to Eastern US forests.

We are expecting 1,500 or more attendees at this event, which will be free and open to all. TACF scientists will give talks on the species’ history and restoration. We’ll be planting new chestnut trees in the cemetery, all with elevated blight resistance, to complement the six thriving TACF chestnuts already growing there (a gift from former House speaker Tip O’Neill’s children). Meanwhile, cemetery historians will offer tours around Congressional, final resting place of DC luminaries from John Philip Sousa to J. Edgar Hoover. Activities for kids will include fun tree-themed crafts, games, and snacks.

Alongside the free entertainment, we’re inviting select vendors–food, drinks, crafts, and nonprofits — to sponsor tables, reach new customers, sell products, and promote their business at the event. We hope you will join us!
